Content-based image retrieval using multi-scale averaging local binary patterns

Feature extraction has a significant impact on the accuracy of Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) algorithms since the content of images is encoded in feature vectors. In this paper, an effective method for texture feature extraction is proposed based on local patterns. In the proposed method, first the image is formed in different scales, then the texture features are extracted from the scales of the image. Finally, extracted features of different scales are concatenated to construct the final feature vector. To evaluate the proposed method, five datasets including Corel-1k, Brodatz, VisTex, Corel-10k, STex, Caltech256, and Oliva are used. In the evaluation process, the effect of different scales and different coding schemes on retrieval precision is investigated. The proposed method is compared with existing CBIR models based on local patterns. The proposed method achieves the best precision of 64.16%, 81.66%, 88.59%, 30.63%, and 69.63%, 13.59%, and 64.10% on the Corel-1k, Brodatz, VisTex, Corel-10k, STex, Caltech256, and Oliva datasets, respectively.

Research on Face Attribute Recognition Technology Based on Fine-Grained Features

Abstract This study explores fine-grained feature-based face attribute recognition techniques to enhance the accuracy of face recognition in low-resolution and complex environments. The article proposes a global feature extraction method and a local texture feature extraction method to extract global and regional features by enhancing feature reuse and information flow through dense connectivity and ShuffleNet V2 framework. Then, a multiscale feature exchange method is used to fuse different scale features to enhance the capture of detail information. Finally, efficient feature integration is achieved by the multiscale feature fusion method. Experimental results on the CK+ and FER2013 datasets show that the accuracy of this method on face expression recognition reaches 97.24% and 95.93%, respectively, and the average recognition accuracy in the face attribute recognition experiments on the CelebA dataset is 97.11%, which is significantly better than the comparison algorithm. In addition, the analysis of the recognition effect on low-resolution faces shows that this paper’s method achieves a recognition accuracy of 54.03% at a resolution of 15 × 15 and a high accuracy of over 99% at resolutions of 70 × 70 and above. These results show that the face attribute recognition technique based on fine-grained features proposed in this paper significantly improves recognition accuracy.

An Exploration of Face Recognition Methods Based on LBP Algorithm and PCA Analysis

Local Binary Pattern is an operator that can be effectively used for facial description, and its application field is relatively wide, which has made great contribution to the research and technical support related to face recognition. The traditional local texture feature extraction method of LBP operator is relatively single and cannot fully synthesize the problem of neighborhood correlation. Therefore, this paper proposes a face recognition method based on the combination of LBP algorithm and PCA principal component analysis method for the above problems. Through the application of this method, it can effectively weaken the influence of noise on the results and show the basic characteristic situation of the sub-block region, and the experiments of this method have confirmed that, compared with the use of PCA, LBP and other methods alone, the method in this study has a significant improvement in the recognition rate.

Contactless Biometric Based on Palm Vein Recognition Using Wavelet and Local Line Binary Patterns

To support the roadmap for coexistence with Covid-19, contactless biometrics is needed as an individual identity verification technology in daily activities such as control systems, recording attendance at offices/schools/agencies and access rights to a room. An example of contactless biometrics is palm vein-based biometrics. Because it is contactless, this biometric system does not require direct contact between the user and the sensor device, providing several advantages in terms of comfort during acquisition and is more hygienic. In the palm vein recognition system, the palm vein pattern can be considered as a texture feature. Therefore, this study proposes a contactless biometric system based on palm vein recognition using the Local Line Binary Pattern method to extract texture features of palm vein images resulting from the decomposition of the 2D Wavelet Transformation, so as to produce a small texture descriptor that is compatible with the texture characteristics of thin veins. The proposed texture feature extraction method has been tested using the fuzzy k-NN classification method on 600 palm images with a CRR accuracy of 95.0% with a computation time of 0.057 seconds.

Identification of mango variety using near infrared spectroscopy

<p>The structure of the proposed framework is separated into three stages: i) foundation deduction, ii) component extraction, and iii) preparing and characterization. At first, K-implies grouping methods were carried out for foundation de- duction. The second step applies color, texture, and shape-based feature extraction methods. Finally, a “merging” fusion feature is analyzed with a C4.5, support vector machine (SVM), and K-nearest neighbors (KNN). Overall, the recognition system produces an adequate performance accuracy with 97.89, 94.60, and 90.25 percent values by utilizing C4.5, SVM, and KNN, respectively. The experimentation points out that the proposed fusion scheme can significantly support accurately recognizing various fruits and vegetables.</p>

Learning Vector Quantization for Robusta and Arabica Coffee Classification

ANN or artificial neural network is a way to solve various kinds of problems to make decisions based on training. One of the methods of JSt which contains competitive and supervised learning. Where this layer will automatically learn the classification of the closest input distances and will be distributed to the same class. there are 2 types of coffee beans that are famous in the world, namely arabica and robusta, for some people or the layman it will be very difficult to distinguish these 2 types of coffee beans apart from the fact that the shape is almost the same the color looks almost the same but there are a number of differences in the two coffee beans which we can see from the shape of the seed. Robusta has a shape that tends to be round and smaller in size, and has a rougher texture. Arabica, on the other hand, is slightly flatter and longer in shape. The size is slightly bigger than Robusta but the texture of Arabica is smoother than Robusta. This is the basis of this study where the images of the two coffee beans will be extracted using the first-order texture feature extraction method based on MU parameters, standard deviation, skewness, energy, entropy, and smoothness. The method for collecting data was in the form of a quantitative method using images from each coffee bean, both Arabica and Robusta, with a total of 130 images. The comparison between training_data and test_data is 80:20. Through research conducted in the form of performance parameters with the best accuracy, including: Learning rate 0.01, max epoch or maximum iteration of 10 and 30%, the amount of training data used is 39 training images and 26 test images resulting in an accuracy presentation of 71% for the training process and error with a percentage of 96% for the test process.

Short Review on Palm Oil Fresh Fruit Bunches Ripeness and Classification Technique

High quality palm oil is critical in ensuring Malaysia’s competitiveness in the sector. Studies have shown that there is a significant relationship between the quality of palm oil produced and the ripeness of the fruits used in producing the oil. Correct ripeness of the fresh fruit bunches (FFB) produces higher quality and more oil content. Unripe FFB produces the least oil and overripe FFB produces oil of lower quality. According to Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), the main factors that determine the ripeness of the oil palm FFB are its colour and the number of its loose fruits. To classify the ripeness according to these two factors, there are 3 common techniques has been implemented in the previous work which are; colour feature extraction, texture feature extraction and Deep Learning method. To handle fruit ripeness classification problem, this paper provides a short review to the reader to grasp the applicable technique that can be implemented.

Computer-aided recognition and assessment of a porous bioelastomer in ultrasound images for regenerative medicine applications

It is difficult to use a single edge operator in image processing to extract continuous and accurate contours of a porous bioelastomer due to the fuzzy boundary and complex background in ultrasound images. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a joint algorithm for bioelastomer contour detection and a texture feature extraction method for monitoring the degradation performance of bioelastomers. First, the mean-shift clustering method is utilized to obtain the clustering feature information of bioelastomers and native tissue from manually segmented images, and this information is used as the initial information in the image binarization algorithm for image partitioning. Second, Otsu's thresholding method and mathematical morphology are applied in the process of image binarization. Finally, the Canny edge detector is employed to extract the complete bioelastomers contour from the binary image. To verify the robustness of the proposed joint algorithm, the results using the proposed joint algorithm, where mean-shift clustering is replaced with k-means clustering are also obtained. The proposed joint algorithm based on mean-shift clustering outperforms the joint algorithm based on k-means clustering, as well as algorithms that directly apply the Canny, Sobel and Laplacian methods. Texture feature extraction is based on the computer-aided recognition of bioelastomers. The region of interest (ROI) is set in the scaffold region, and the first-order statistical features and second-order statistical features of the greyscale values of the ROI are extracted and analysed. The proposed joint algorithm can not only extract ideal bioelastomers contours from ultrasound images but also provide valuable feedback on the degradation behaviour of bioelastomers at implant sites.

Classification of intracranial hemorrhage CT images based on texture analysis using ensemble-based machine learning algorithms: A comparative study

Blood vessels in the brain tissue can leak or burst, causing an intracranial hemorrhage, a potentially fatal disorder. One of the critical steps in brain stroke imaging is the categorization of intracranial hemorrhages. This article aims to perform texture-based intracranial hemorrhage computed tomography image classification with ensemble and machine learning classifiers using local binary pattern, local ternary pattern, and Weber local descriptor approach. The most common texture feature extraction method is a local binary pattern; however, other methods such as local ternary pattern, Weber local descriptor, and local binary pattern are also utilized for texture feature extraction. For all the extracted texture codes, histograms are applied, and finally, single feature vector texture codes by performing the concatenation of the bin. The efficacy of feature descriptors for classifying images into abnormal and normal classes was assessed using ten distinct classifiers. The result shows that Weber's local descriptor shows promising results in texture code classification for ensemble-based classification. For all texture-based methods, classification accuracy was better than standard machine learning. According to the findings of the experiment, the Random Forest classifier outperformed all other classifiers in terms of classification accuracy (86.55%), recall (86.31%), precision (87.23%), sensitivity (86.31%), specificity (86.81%), and F1-score (86.77%) for the Weber local descriptor.

Combination of texture feature extraction and forward selection for one-class support vector machine improvement in self-portrait classification

<span lang="EN-US">This study aims to validate self-portraits using one-class support vector machine (OCSVM). To validate accurately, we build a model by combining texture feature extraction methods, Haralick and local binary pattern (LBP). We also reduce irrelevant features using forward selection (FS). OCSVM was selected because it can solve the problem caused by the inadequate variation of the negative class population. In OCSVM, we only need to feed the algorithm using the true class data, and the data with pattern that does not match will be classified as false. However, combining the two feature extractions produces many features, leading to the curse of dimensionality. The FS method is used to overcome this problem by selecting the best features. From the experiments carried out, the Haralick+LBP+FS+OCSVM model outperformed other models with an accuracy of 95.25% on validation data and 91.75% on test data.</span>

Hyperspectral Meets Optical Flow: Spectral Flow Extraction for Hyperspectral Image Classification.

Hyperspectral image (HSI) classification has always been recognised as a difficult task. It is therefore a research hotspot in remote sensing image processing and analysis, and a number of studies have been conducted to better extract spectral and spatial features. This study aimed to track the variation of the spectrum in hyperspectral images from a sequential data perspective to obtain more distinguishable features. Based on the characteristics of optical flow, this study introduces an optical flow technique for the extraction of spectral flow that denotes the spectral variation and implements a dense optical flow extraction method based on deep matching. Lastly, the extracted spectral flow are combined with the original spectral features and input into a commonly used support vector machine (SVM) classifier to complete the classification. Extensive classification experiments on three benchmark HSI test sets show that the classification accuracy obtained by the spectral flow extracted in this study (SpectralFlow) is higher than traditional spatial feature extraction methods, texture feature extraction methods, and the latest deep-learning-based methods. Furthermore, the proposed method can produce finer classification thematic maps, thereby demonstrating strong practical application potential.

Identification of cashmere and wool based on LBP and GLCM texture feature selection

There are invalid and redundant features in the texture feature extraction method of cashmere and wool fibers, which leads to the low recognition accuracy. In this paper, a novel texture feature selection method based on local binary pattern, the gray level co-occurrence matrix algorithm and chi-square test was proposed to sufficiently extract the effective features of these two fibers. Firstly, the collected images of cashmere and wool fibers are processed to obtain the clear texture images with background removed by pre-processing algorithm and local binary pattern. Then, the texture features are calculated by the gray level co-occurrence matrix, and the optimal 5-dimensional features are extracted by chi-square test to represent the texture information of cashmere and wool. Finally, the two fibers are automatically classified and recognized based on the support vector machine. The experimental results show that the proposed method obtained a high recognition accuracy with the percent of 94.39. It verifies that the method based on texture feature selection is effective to identify cashmere and wool fibers.

DPMSLM Demagnetization Fault Detection Based on Texture Feature Analysis of Grayscale Fusion Image

This study investigates a novel image morphology texture feature extraction method to realize the demagnetization fault location and severity detection of double-sided permanent magnet synchronous linear motor (DPMSLM). Initially, according to the constraints of DPMSLMs topology structure, the three lines magnetic density signal in motor air gap is extracted by finite element analysis as effective fault signal. Then, the grayscale fusion image (GFI) method is introduced to transform 1D data signal to 2D fused grayscale image which can better describe the demagnetization fault information. The unique features are visualized using the image enhancement techniques, and the image morphology texture features such as the area, Euler number, perimeter operator, correlation of binary image and so on can be extracted to constitute the demagnetization fault indexes. In addition, fisher score (FS) is used for feature optimization which can reduce the feature dimension. Furthermore, the two-level multiverse optimization support vector machine (MVO-SVM) algorithm is established to conduct demagnetization fault classification. Comparison experiments with other classifiers show that the MVO-SVM has a high fault identification accuracy of more than 98.3% and low running time less than 2.57s. Finally, the motor prototype experiment results show that the proposed method can accurately identify the location and severity of DPMSLM demagnetization faults, and it is an effective and feasible method which can be applied in DPMLM batch demagnetization inspection before delivery.

Research on Parking Space Status Recognition Method Based on Computer Vision

To improve the utilization rate of parking space resources and reduce the cost of installing and maintaining sensor recognition, this paper proposed an improved computer vision-based parking space status recognition method. The overall recognition accuracy was improved by graying the video, filtering smoothing noise reduction, image enhancement pre-processing, introducing texture feature extraction method based on LBP operator, improving the background difference method, and then, we used a perceptual hash algorithm to calculate the Hamming distance between the background image and the hash string of the current frame of the video, excluding the influence of light and pedestrian on recognition accuracy. Finally, a parking space status recognition system is developed relied on the Python environment, and parking spaces are recognized in three environmental states: with direct light, without direct light, and in rain and snow. The overall average accuracy of the experimental results was 97.2%, which verifies the accuracy of the model.

Evaluation Model of Regional Comprehensive Disaster Reduction Capacity under Complex Environment.

In order to realize the evaluation of regional comprehensive disaster reduction capacity in a complex environment, an evaluation model of regional comprehensive disaster reduction capacity in a complex environment based on remote sensing monitoring and data image feature analysis is proposed. According to the geographical location and scale of disaster spots and the parameter analysis of the model of disaster-bearing bodies around the disaster spots, the remote sensing monitoring method is adopted to extract the geographical remote sensing images of regional disaster spots in a complex environment. The collected geographical remote sensing images of regional disaster points under the complex environmental background are filtered and preprocessed, and the texture parameters of the geographical remote sensing images of regional disaster points under the complex environmental background are recognized by combining the method of image texture feature extraction. Based on the method of tone mapping, the rapid filtering and feature analysis of the geographical remote sensing images of regional disaster points under the complex environmental background are carried out, and the time, position, damage, and so on in the geographical remote sensing images of regional disaster points under the complex environmental background are analyzed. By using the method of parameter analysis and gradient operator operation, a comparison model of geographical remote sensing images of regional disaster points under the complex environmental background is established, and the reliability evaluation of regional comprehensive disaster reduction ability under the complex environmental background is realized according to the method of contrast and detail significance enhancement. The test shows that this method has high accuracy in evaluating regional comprehensive disaster reduction capability under a complex environment, high accuracy in marking the geographical location of regional disaster points under a complex environment, and good fusion performance and reliability of regional comprehensive disaster reduction capability evaluation parameters.

The effect of quantization at different resolutions on the classification of lesion texture in dermoscopic images using support vector machine

AbstractDermoscopic images have been recently used for automated diagnosis of skin lesions with successful results and a potential for widescale applications. Cooccurrence matrix (COM) is a statistical method of texture feature extraction that remains possibly the most interpretable and expandable method in its category. COM is investigated on four groups of dermoscopic images (high resolution ROI: HRR, medium resolution ROI: MRR, low resolution ROI: LRR, and mixed resolution: MixR), using three different gray level quantization values (b = 25, 15, and 8). Three skin regions were outlined: melanoma, common nevi, and normal skin. Texture features were extracted then Support Vector Machine (SVM) was used as a machine learning classification algorithm. Sensitivity, specificity, and the area under the ROC curve (AUC), were calculated and compared. In the classification processes that involved either melanoma or common nevi against normal skin, MRR at quantization value b = 15 showed an effective and a high‐performance choice. On the other hand, when classification involved the two lesions, melanoma, and common nevi, quantization value b = 25 showed best results at both HRR and MRR. A high quantization value at intermediate resolution shows to be an effective choice that balances performance with calculation cost. In all cases, quantization at b = 8 deteriorated the classification output even at high resolution. MixR showed good results when normal skin was classified against either type of lesion. In conclusion, selecting the appropriate quantization is a crucial factor that outweighs resolution effect by itself, and can significantly alter the SVM‐COM model performance in automated skin cancer diagnosis.

Color Texture Analysis: A Survey

In the field of image processing, texture features and color are fundamental visual cue with complementary roles. They are used in many applications and in a large variety of areas such as quality control, content-based image retrieval, remote sensing, industrial inspection, surface inspection, object recognition, and medical image analysis. For this purpose, a large number of algorithms have been proposed for texture feature extraction. Some of them are dedicated to gray-scale images while others aim at processing both color and texture. It has been shown that, for many cases, the use of color improves the performance of gray level texture classification. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of the texture feature extraction methods that consider both texture and color information. We propose a categorization of these methods into seven classes, two of them being very recent. For each method, we present the concept, the advantages and drawbacks, and we give examples of application.
